Designing an Anna Maria Island Vacation Rental After a Hurricane
In the fall of 2024, Anna Maria Island faced back-to-back hurricanes that changed homes, businesses, and lives throughout the community. Hurricane Helene brought devastating storm surge and flooding to the island in late September. Less than two weeks later, Hurricane Milton made landfall near Siesta Key, bringing another round of powerful winds, rain and destruction to Florida’s Gulf Coast.
As a local business, we experienced the devastation firsthand. But when calls began coming in from our clients and community, our team was all hands on deck, ready to help however we could.
One project that will always remain close to our hearts is The Beach House, a vacation rental in the City of Anna Maria managed by our close friends at Duncan Real Estate.
We understood that restoring this home meant more than completing another design project. It meant supporting our local community, helping our friends and clients move forward and creating a beautiful place where families could return to enjoy the island we are so fortunate to call home.
What began as hurricane recovery became a complete interior refresh centered on comfort, durability, and the relaxed beauty of the island.
The Impact of Hurricanes Helene and Milton
Hurricane Helene left portions of Anna Maria Island underwater. Homes and businesses flooded, roads were buried beneath sand, properties filled with sand and debris, and many residents returned to find years of memories damaged or completely lost.
Before the island had time to fully assess the damage and start recovery a second storm, Hurricane Milton, followed adding wind and water damage to homes that were still vulnerable from Helene.
Our island depends heavily on its locally owned businesses, vacation rentals, and hospitality industry, and with access restricted and many properties temporarily unable to welcome visitors, the storms affected homeowners, business owners, employees and the island’s tourism economy.
Still, the community responded in the way Anna Maria Island always does: together. Neighbors helped neighbors, volunteers cleared debris, and local businesses began reopening.
A New Beginning for The Beach House
The Beach House is a three-bedroom, two-and-a-half-bath vacation home designed to accommodate up to eight guests. With a private pool and a beachfront location guests love, it was important that the home return to the vacation rental market feeling welcoming, comfortable, and complete.
Following the hurricanes, our work went far beyond selecting a few new furnishings. The home needed to be remediated, repainted, refurnished, and prepped to welcome families again.
Our goal was not simply to replace what had been lost. We wanted to give the home a fresh feel while preserving the easygoing feeling guests expect from an Anna Maria Island vacation.
Designing for Beauty, Comfort and Real Life
A successful vacation rental must do more than photograph beautifully. Every room needs to support the way guests will actually use it, from slow mornings and family dinners to sandy afternoons and evenings spent relaxing after a day at the beach.
For this home, we selected furnishings that balanced coastal style with the practical needs of a frequently enjoyed rental property. A bright white to help refresh the interiors, while new, performance furniture, textiles, and accessories brought comfort, durability, and personality back into every space.
The Importance of Interior Design During Hurricane Recovery
After a hurricane, the first priorities are understandably safety, remediation, and structural repairs. Once those urgent needs are addressed, interior design plays an important role in turning a repaired property back into a home.
For vacation rental owners, that final stage is especially important. An unfinished or inconsistently furnished property can remain off the market longer, while rushed selections may not provide the comfort, durability, or visual continuity guests expect.
Our role was to help move The Beach House from recovery to ready. We guided the vision, selected and coordinated furnishings, refreshed the paint palette and layered in the finishing details that made the home feel whole again.
Managing these pieces as part of one cohesive plan helped create an interior that was not only beautiful but prepared for real guests and real vacations.
Returning to the Rental Market
Today, The Beach House is once again welcoming visitors to Anna Maria Island. Its refreshed interiors offer families a comfortable place to gather, unwind, and enjoy everything that makes this island special.
We’re happy to share that this home has returned to the vacation rental market with a strong booking rate! While many factors influence rental performance, a thoughtfully designed interior can help a property stand out from other listings and create a memorable guest experience.
For us, seeing the home photographed, completed and filled with life again was about more than finishing another design project. It represented a small but meaningful part of Anna Maria Island’s continued recovery.
Reimagining What Comes Next
We are honored to have played a part in this home’s story, and even more grateful to see guests returning, reservations filling the calendar and another piece of Anna Maria Island beautifully brought back to life.
